A Lawrence Police officer was treated for a broken nose and other facial injuries Saturday after an altercation on a call, according an LPD post on social media.

Police were called to a disturbance in the 2400 block of Melrose Lane about 8:30 a.m., where the officer witnessed a man aggressively approaching another person. When the officer tried to speak with him, the man attacked her, punching her several times in the face, according to a post on Facebook. The other person helped get the suspect on the ground as backup units arrived.

The officer was treated for the broken nose and other lacerations and released from the hospital.

According to the Douglas County jail log, Jeffrey Montgomery Smith, 61, of Eudora, was booked at 8:35 a.m. on suspicion of criminal threat, criminal damage to property and battery on a law enforcement officer.
