The Quail Run Elementary principal is set to become the Lawrence school district’s director of data and assessment, and Quail Run’s academic interventionist will take over as principal on an interim basis, pending school board approval.

Current principal James Polk is taking over in data and assessment for Jana Craig-Hare, who was promoted last month to executive director of curriculum and instruction. Polk will continue at Quail Run through August during the leadership transition.

“James has a strong background in supporting teacher teams in examining student performance data, reflecting on effective instruction and interventions, and helping diverse learners improve their academic skills, especially critical reading and math skills,” Superintendent Anthony Lewis said in a news release Friday.

Cynthia Emery, Quail Run’s academic interventionist, will take the reins as interim principal.

“Cynthia’s expertise in reading and math instruction, leading engaging and effective professional development, and in student-centered instructional coaching makes her a great choice to serve as interim principal,” Lewis said in the release. “As a staff member and parent, she already knows the Quail Run school community. I am confident that she will continue to build strong relationships and support educators in improving instruction and advancing student learning.”

This is Emery’s third year as an academic interventionist at Quail Run.

The district says it plans to post the Quail Run principal position and conduct a formal search, providing Quail Run staff and school families the opportunity for input.
