A Lawrence Police Department patrol vehicle is pictured June 28, 2022.
A 46-year-old man was taken to an area hospital Monday night with critical injuries after being struck by a car at an intersection in North Lawrence after allegedly running a red light on his bicycle.
Police responded to the intersection of North Second and Locust streets just before 11 p.m. and found the man on the ground, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department. Investigators believe the bicyclist was riding westbound on Locust Street, ran the red light and was nearly hit by two cars, one traveling north and the other south on North Second Street, Fennelly said.
The man was struck by a third car, a 2014 Ford Escape, that was traveling southbound on North Second Street. The Escape was driven by a 21-year-old woman who remained on the scene during the investigation. Police do not believe the woman was impaired at the time of the crash, Fennelly said.
Police did not have any update on the bicyclist’s injuries as of Tuesday afternoon.
