A former University of Kansas basketball player appeared Wednesday in Douglas County District Court in connection with an alleged rape at KU’s McCarthy Hall.
Arterio Demetrius Morris, 20, of Dallas, faces one felony count of rape, according to charging documents. The charge relates to an incident on Aug. 26 and involves an 18-year-old woman, who alleged that Morris violently assaulted her as she begged him to stop.
Morris was suspended after the woman’s allegation was made public, and he was dismissed from the KU basketball program after he was formally charged. Morris is no longer a student at KU, but he is currently enrolled at Los Angeles Southwest College in California, as the Journal-World reported.
Morris appeared in court with his defense attorney, Hatem Chahine, who entered a not guilty plea on Morris’ behalf and requested that the court schedule a status conference.
Judge Stacey Donovan set the status conference for Nov. 15. Morris is currently free on a $75,000 surety bond.
