A 20-year-old Lawrence man is in custody on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an argument reportedly led to gunfire Saturday morning.
Around 4:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment building at West 26th Street and Redbud Lane on a report of an argument followed by gunfire and people fleeing from the scene, according to a Sunday Facebook post from the Lawrence Police Department.
During its investigation, officers discovered that a bullet had pierced through one apartment and entered into another. No injuries were reported. Lawrence police allege the suspect was approached by a known acquaintance who wanted his gun back, setting off the argument, according to the post.
“Once gunfire was heard, the man who had approached the occupant took off with some friends, but waited around the corner to speak to police,” the post said.
The suspect surrendered without further incident, according to police.
According to Douglas County Jail booking logs, Cole Michael Nichols, of Lawrence, was booked into the jail around 4:45 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of aggravated assault, use of a deadly weapon, criminal discharge of a firearm, and theft of property or services. He is being held on $10,000 cash or surety bond.
