Exchange of gunfire late Friday in west Lawrence leads to arrest of 48-year-old man

A 48-year-old Lawrence man is in custody for allegedly firing gunshots at a another man late Friday night in a west Lawrence neighborhood.

According to a Lawrence Police Department social media post, Lawrence police officers responded at about 10:30 p.m. Friday to numerous calls reporting multiple gunshots in the 1900 block of Heatherwood Drive. Upon arrival at the scene, officers identified a 29-year-old man, who reported a known individual had tried to shoot him. The victim, who was not injured in the incident, told police he used his own firearm to return fire.

Upon further investigation, officers determined the suspect was inside a house in the same block, the post states. Officers established a perimeter around the house at about 11 p.m. and the Lawrence Police Department Tactical Team was called to the scene. Making use of an armored vehicle and loudspeaker, the team attempted to convince the suspect to surrender but got no response. After several hours, team members entered the house and arrested a 48-year-old suspect, who was found to be uninjured from the shots fired at him.

According to the Douglas County Jail booking logs, Joshua Evan Townsend, 48, of 1951 Heatherwood Drive, was arrested at 4 a.m Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder in the second degree.
