A Lawrence man was charged Thursday in Douglas County District Court with sexual exploitation of a child.

The man, Larry Dale Athey Jr., 43, is facing a single felony count of sexual exploitation of a child by possessing a nude photo of a minor, according to charging documents. The incident is alleged to have occurred on or about April 22, 2022.

Athey was arrested by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies, who served a warrant on Wednesday afternoon at his home in the 2400 block of Melrose Lane, according to the jail booking log.

On Thursday, the court appointed Michael Clarke to represent Athey, and Athey was given a $25,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning he was not required to pay any money to be released from jail but could be charged that amount if he fails to appear in court. As a bond condition, he is not allowed to use the internet.

Athey is next scheduled in court for a status conference on June 21.

The Journal-World has requested Athey’s Booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
