A teenager was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder Tuesday in connection with a shooting that injured a man at a North Lawrence motel last week.
According to the Douglas County Jail booking log, Lawrence police arrested Evan Gauge Heffner, 18, of Lawrence, in connection with the shooting, which was reported on May 10 at the Motel 6 at 1130 N. Third St. Heffner was arrested at around noon at his home in the 200 block of Lincoln Street in North Lawrence, according to the booking log.
As the Journal-World previously reported, officers responded to the Motel 6 just before 10:30 p.m. on May 10, but they learned that no gunshot victim was at the scene, LPD spokeswoman Laura McCabe said. About 10 minutes later, police were advised that a man with a gunshot wound had arrived at the hospital emergency room. The man had been struck by gunfire in the shoulder and was able to provide some information about the incident, McCabe said.
McCabe said Tuesday afternoon that investigators were still working to produce an affidavit recommending charges to send to the district attorney’s office, but that police would be suggesting charges of attempted first-degree murder.
