A sergeant with the Lawrence Police Department was treated at a hospital Monday night for injuries he received while arresting a man who fled from police, according to a news release Tuesday from LPD.
Police said that dash camera video showed officers as they witnessed a white pickup truck driving recklessly near Seventh and Vermont streets around 8:20 p.m. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver didn’t comply. The truck proceeded the wrong way on Tennessee Street, later cut in front of a city bus, then continued driving erratically through neighborhood streets and ultimately through yards, police said. The suspect eventually pulled into a residence in the 800 block of Morning Dove Court and refused to exit the vehicle. Eventually, he fled into the home, followed by police officers.
Inside the residence, the suspect continued to resist, using physical force, police said in the release, but officers were able to arrest him after a struggle.
One officer suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention. The injured sergeant, who was first in line entering the home, was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for multiple injuries and contusions. The sergeant, now at home, is expected to make a full recovery, but police did not have an estimated timeline.
The suspect, 44-year-old Craig Gunther, was charged Tuesday in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of battery on a law enforcement officer, one felony count of flee and elude, one felony count of interference with law enforcement and one misdemeanor count of battery on a law enforcement officer.
Gunther was being held on a $4,000 cash or surety bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court on May 10 for a status conference.
The Lawrence Police Department has released an edited version of the pursuit.
