A Lawrence woman was charged with arson on Monday in connection with a fire in a trash container in downtown Lawrence.

The woman, Jill Elizabeth Walkinshaw, 62, has been charged in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of arson, according to charging documents. The incident is alleged to have occurred early Sunday morning.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews responded to the intersection of Eighth and Massachusetts streets around 4:30 a.m. and found a fire in a commercial trash container, Division Chief Kevin Joles said.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire using a pressurized water can before a fire investigator was called to the scene. Lawrence police had detained a person of interest by the time the investigator arrived, Joles said, and the investigation is still underway. No injuries were reported.

According to the jail booking log, Walkinshaw was arrested at 746 Massachusetts St. around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. She appeared in court Monday afternoon, when she was given a $1,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning she was not required to put up any money to be released from jail. She is next scheduled to appear in court on July 19.
