Updated at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 3

A motorcyclist was hospitalized after an accident Friday on U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence.

In an email, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Diepenbrock wrote that shorty after 2 p.m. Friday, a 76-year-old motorcyclist from Council Bluffs, Iowa, lost control of the vehicle when its rear tire blew out about 7 miles south of Lawrence on U.S. Highway 59. The blowout caused the southbound motorcycle to veer off the road into the median, where it rolled before coming to a rest and catching on fire.

The motorcyclist, whose name was not released, was taken to a Kansas City area hospital for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
