A forensics team works at the intersection of Sixth and Vermont streets on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, after a man's body — later determined to be David Blaine Sullivan — was discovered under the nearby trees.
A day after a Lawrence man’s body was discovered near the Kansas River Bridge in downtown Lawrence, police said they had some leads in the potential homicide but no suspect in custody.
The body of 62-year-old David Blaine Sullivan was discovered Wednesday morning by a passerby who called 911. Police responded to the intersection of Sixth and Vermont streets about 10:45 a.m. and found Sullivan on the ground near the trees northwest of the intersection.
Police said they suspected foul play in the incident, but they did not provide any further details about Sullivan’s manner of death. They noted Wednesday that an autopsy result was expected this week.
On Thursday, Sgt. Drew Fennelly with LPD told the Journal-World that police had “developed a handful of leads in the case and it remains a very active investigation.”
Fennelly said that because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, “it wouldn’t be appropriate to share specific details as that could impact how it moves forward.”
He encouraged the public to share any information they may have, whether it be through dispatch at (785) 832-7509, or anonymously through CrimeStoppers of Douglas County at (785) 843-TIPS.
“While we aren’t able to share many details on the specifics of the case, we want the public to know that we’re working hard to find out exactly what happened,” Fennelly said.
