Lawrence police investigating gunfire in south Lawrence after dozens of shell casings found

The Lawrence Police Department is investigating a gunfire incident after dozens of shell casings were found in south Lawrence.

The department posted on social media Tuesday morning that officers were called to the sound of gunfire near the intersection of 34th and Iowa streets just before midnight on Monday. A witness reported hearing bullets “hitting things,” the post said.

When police arrived they discovered a bullet lodged in a nearby tree and other trees in the area with fresh damage. No injuries were reported, but investigators found more than two dozen spent shell casings at the scene, the post said. Police were unable to locate a suspect.
