A Lawrence man has been charged with burglary after allegedly entering a rural Douglas County residence after crashing a vehicle nearby.

Ulices Deaquino Altamarino, 20, faces one count of aggravated burglary and one misdemeanor count of theft, according to charging documents filed in Douglas County District Court. He was originally arrested on suspicion of DUI and burglary, according to the Douglas County Jail’s booking log, but Altamarino has not been charged with DUI.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man who had entered a home around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of East 1400 Road, said George Diepenbrock, a spokesperson with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Altamarino was allegedly involved in a single-vehicle crash nearby in the 1300 block of North 1100 Road before a resident called police.

When deputies arrived, they found Altamarino in the driveway of the residence and took him into custody, Diepenbrock said. The residents of the home reported that a pair of keys had gone missing but the keys were later found in the driveway.

Altamarino was booked into the Douglas County Jail around 5:15 a.m. Sunday and was released Monday afternoon on a $30,000 own-recognizance bond, meaning he was not required to pay any money to be released from jail but may be fined if he fails to appear at his next court date. Defense attorney John Kerns was appointed to represent Altamarino, who is next scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 15 for a status update, according to court records.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has declined to release Altamarino’s booking photo.
