Crews work to investigate the damage caused by a water main break on Aug. 24, 2023, at the intersection of 13th and Ohio streets.

A water main break near the University of Kansas campus on Thursday resulted in a damaged city street and a closed intersection.

The intersection of 13th and Ohio streets was affected by the water main break in the early-morning hours, and crews were still assessing the full extent of the damage Thursday afternoon.

Krehbiel Scholarship Hall, which sits on the southeast corner of the intersection, was without water for a short time, but service was restored, said Tress Potter, field supervisor for the City of Lawrence’s Municipal Services and Operations.

The water flow filled the space below the street, causing it to start to buckle, Potter said. Crews were investigating the damage while trying to avoid additional damage to the road, Potter said.

The intersection was still closed as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Journal-World has reached out to the city for more information.
