Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews successfully extinguished a fire in the basement of a south Lawrence house on Sunday morning.

First responders were dispatched to 2614 Belle Crest Drive at approximately 10:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a possible structure fire.

LDCFM Battalion Chief Rob Fleeup told the Journal-World that crews battled flames in the basement upon arrival and that there were no reports of injuries in the residence.

Tracy Davis, who lives on Belle Crest Drive, told the Journal-World that he made the emergency call after seeing smoke billowing from the back window of the home, but that flames were not visible at the time. Davis also noted that he saw a Lawrence police officer break a side window in order to gain entry to the garage.

Crews were on the scene for roughly an hour. Fleeup said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
