Lawrence emergency crews late Thursday battled a fire in a mobile home park near the Douglas County Fairgrounds that had affected at least three homes there, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.
All occupants from the three homes were able to get out, and the Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents, the fire department said, but one pet died in the fire. A resident at the scene Friday said the pet was a dog.
Firefighters arrived at Brookwood Mobile Home Park after receiving a 911 call at 11:11 p.m. to find a mobile home fully engulfed, and the heat from the home was extreme enough to damage homes on both sides of it. The fire was brought under control at 12:02 a.m. Friday, the fire department said.
One Brookwood resident at the scene Friday morning, who did not want to be identified, said he had just gone to bed Thursday night when he heard a loud boom. He went to his living room window and could see a large fire on a neighbor’s porch, he said. Though this man’s mobile home sustained some damage from the fire, he was able to remain at his home.
