A Free State student was taken into custody Tuesday after a report of a threat of a school shooting, according to the Lawrence school district.

A Free State High School parent reported to the school Tuesday morning that their student heard another Free State student make a comment on Friday about “shooting up the school” on Tuesday, the district said in a news release. The school administration worked with a school resource officer to investigate. While interviewing the student alleged to have made the threat, the student refused to comply with school staff and the SRO and left school grounds, the release said.

Lawrence police, in a news release Tuesday afternoon, said the SRO tried to speak with the student and asked him to turn over his backpack, but he refused. With reason to believe the student was armed, the SRO requested backup while continuing to ask the student to comply, police said. Another responding officer got in front of the student and was able to detain him without further incident.

Officers took the student into custody across the street from the school on Overland Drive and informed school staff that no weapon was found on the student.

School staff contacted the student’s family and will follow up with disciplinary action in accordance with board policy, the district said. Free State High staff and families also were notified of the investigation.

“Lawrence Public Schools appreciates students and families continuing to report safety concerns to school staff and the Lawrence Police Department for its support in investigating this reported threat,” the district release said.

Police described the alleged threat as “concerning” and detailed.

“We’re glad this ended the way it did,” Deputy Chief Adam Heffley said.
