A Lawrence man was charged Monday in Douglas County District Court after allegedly assaulting three police officers with a firearm.

Tiburcio Joe Reyes III, 38, is charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer and one felony count of interference with law enforcement, according to charging documents.

The charges relate to an incident Saturday, when Lawrence police responded to the 1400 block of Summit Street around 9:30 p.m. after a man called to report that cars with people inside were parked on his street; the man complained to police of recent burglaries in the area, said Laura McCabe, spokesperson with the Lawrence Police Department.

Officers contacted the man while they were still a block away because the man had allegedly threatened to start shooting people if they didn’t move their cars. When police approached the man’s house on foot, the man met the officers with a weapon in his hand, McCabe said. The man dropped the weapon when commanded to but became confrontational with the officers, she said.

The man then allegedly began to throw items at the police, threatened them with violence and went in and out of his house several times before confronting the officers with another weapon, McCabe said. The officers were able to de-escalate the situation and arrest the man. No injuries were reported, McCabe said.

Reyes was arrested at his home around 10:20 p.m. Saturday, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. He was released Monday afternoon on a $50,000 own-recognizance bond. Reyes is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2 for a scheduling conference.

The Journal-World has requested Reyes’ booking photo from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
