Resident displaced after kitchen fire at Lawrence apartment complex

One resident was displaced after an apartment fire on Friday morning in central Lawrence, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.

Battalion Chief Rob Fleeup said that crews responded to the fire at Prairie Ridge Place Apartments, 2424 Melrose Lane, at around 10:50 a.m. Friday. When they arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from an upper-level apartment, Fleeup said.

Fleeup said the fire was in the kitchen of the apartment and was under control by 11:16 a.m. Paramedics evaluated one person for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries, Fleeup said.

The amount of damage to the apartment has yet to be determined, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fleeup said. The occupant of the apartment is working with the property management to find accommodations.
