Pomona man, passenger arrested in Eudora after early-morning chase

A Pomona man and his female passenger were arrested in Eudora early Saturday morning after a chase that started in Lawrence, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman George Diepenbrock, the chase started at 1:10 a.m. Saturday when a deputy tried to stop a reportedly stolen vehicle near 23rd and Harper streets in Lawrence. The driver of the vehicle fled east, eventually entering Kansas Highway 10.

The vehicle was stopped after a Eudora police officer placed a spike strip in its path, puncturing its tires, Diepenbrock said; the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the cable barrier in the K-10 median. Diepenbrock said the driver was apprehended after attempting to flee on foot.

Thomas James Martin, 35, of Pomona, was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of felony theft, reckless driving, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer and attempting to flee/elude law enforcement in commission of a felony, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. A passenger in the vehicle, Melissa Faye Brooks, 36, of Edgerton, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and on suspicion of drug possession charges, Diepenbrock said.

The Lawrence Police Department also aided the sheriff’s office in the incident, Diepenbrock said.
