A Lawrence man serving 18 years for a 2018 robbery and shooting was sentenced to an additional 40 months on Monday for burglary and other crimes committed while he was out on bond.
In the most recent case, the man, Michael Alexander Hormell, 22, was convicted in Douglas County District Court in March of one count of burglary and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. He was originally charged with aggravated robbery, criminal possession of a firearm and interference with law enforcement, but he pleaded no contest to the amended charges as part of a plea agreement.
The charges are connected to an armed robbery in the 200 block of North Seventh Street on April 23, 2020, according to charging documents. Hormell was on bond at the time of the robbery, facing charges for robbing and shooting a teen in 2018, which he was later convicted of.
Judge Amy Hanley on Monday sentenced Hormell to 32 months for the burglary charge and eight months for each gun charge. The two gun charges will run concurrently with each other and consecutively with the burglary charge, bringing the total sentence to 40 months.
Hanley said the 40 months would run consecutively with the 18-year sentence Hormell received in June of 2021.
As previously reported by the Journal-World, Hormell received 216 months, or 18 years, for aggravated robbery and 32 months for attempted voluntary manslaughter for a shooting on Jan. 26, 2018, at Parnell Park, 901 E. 15th St. Those sentences are running concurrently.
Hormell was facing three additional cases, but District Attorney Suzanne Valdez said that the state would be dismissing those charges in the interest of saving the court time and additional costs since Hormell would already be spending a long time in state custody.
Hormell was returned to the Douglas County Jail after sentencing until he can be transferred to a Kansas Department of Corrections facility to complete the remainder of his sentence.
