A man was charged Tuesday in Douglas County District Court with burglary and identity theft.
David Allen Thomas, 40, was transferred from the Norton, Kansas, correctional facility to face new charges for felony burglary of a motor vehicle, two counts of felony identity theft and one count of theft. The charges are in connection with an incident on Sept. 11, 2021, according to charging documents. He is alleged to have taken two business debit cards and broken into a vehicle.
The alleged incident occurred days before Thomas was sentenced to 36 months in prison by Judge Kay Huff on Sept. 14, 2021, for possession of methamphetamine and theft charges from November of 2020. He was also ordered to pay $11,890 in restitution for that conviction, according to court records.
Thomas has had multiple convictions over the years in Douglas County for theft and burglary, including a string of burglaries in Eudora in 2011, the Journal-World reported. He was granted probation by Huff in that case despite pleading no contest to three felonies and eight misdemeanor charges, including three counts of endangering a child.
Thomas is currently being held at the Douglas County Jail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
