Small child finds handgun in home, shoots Wamego woman

MANHATTAN — A Wamego woman was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after she was accidentally shot by a child, authorities said.

Emergency responders who went to a home early Wednesday found a 31-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound, Wamego police said.

She was hospitalized at Stormont Vail in Topeka with critical injuries.

Officials say evidence indicates the woman was shot by a handgun fired by a small child, WIBW reported.

Wamego Police Chief Michael Baker said a mother, father and child lived in the home where the shooting occurred.

No names or further information have been released.
