A Lawrence man has been charged in the death of a person after allegedly distributing an illegal drug.

The man, John Paul Beckwith, 27, was arrested on Jan. 25 on suspicion of distributing a controlled substance that resulted in death, a level-one person felony, according to a complaint filed in Douglas County District Court.

The incident occurred on or around Oct. 8, 2021, according to the complaint. Details about what the substance was, where the incident occurred and the identity of the deceased were not available Thursday.

Beckwith’s bond was set at $150,000, and he was released with a GPS monitoring device on Tuesday, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log.

A preliminary hearing, at which a judge will decide whether there’s enough evidence to order Beckwith to stand trial, has been set for May 3.
