Leavenworth man pleads no contest in killing of 12-year-old

LEAVENWORTH — A Kansas man has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder for the shooting death last year of a 12-year-old boy outside a Leavenworth pharmacy.

Darvon Deshawn Thomas, 26, of Leavenworth, entered the plea Tuesday in Leavenworth County District Court, admitting to his role in the April death of 12-year-old Brian Henderson, of Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Star reported.

Prosecutors say Henderson was in the backseat of a car with someone planning to meet and sell Thomas a gun. Police say $400 was exchanged for the gun, and when Thomas realized it was a BB gun, he ordered two juveniles with him to “get them.”

One teen fired multiple shots at the vehicle Henderson was in, hitting the child several times, police said, although he was not the intended target. The child’s mother told the Star that her son had been with his older sister and went with her when she accepted a ride from someone she knew before the shooting.

The two teens allegedly with Thomas are also standing trial in the killing. Thomas is set to be sentenced in March.
