Authorities on Monday evening released the names of a father and daughter found dead from gunshot wounds near Baldwin City.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has named David M. Koch, 55, and his 13-year-old daughter Hayden Koch as the two people found dead from gunshot wounds Monday morning.

According to a press release issued by the office around 6:45 p.m, after an initial investigation, authorities believe that Hayden Koch died from a gunshot wound and that David Koch died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The person who reported the incident was not injured.

“The Sheriff’s Office is with this family in this most horrific time of tragedy, and we hope for healing and peace as they work through what is the most painful time no family should have to endure,” said Sheriff Jay Armbrister in the release.

The shooting was reported in the 700 block of East 1550 Road, southeast of Lawrence. Deputies were notified just after 7 a.m. Monday of a possible shooting at the residence. The sheriff’s office announced earlier on Monday that deputies discovered two people inside who had died.

By mid-morning, detectives, deputies and Douglas County Coroner Scene Investigators were busy investigating the circumstances of the shooting. The sheriff’s department quickly determined that the incident posed no further threat to the public and the surrounding rural area. Other details of the incident, including a motive, haven’t been released by investigators.

Other details about the victims and family aren’t immediately clear, however, a spokesman for the city of Lawrence confirmed that a David M. Koch was an employee of the city, working as a maintenance worker in its Municipal Services & Operations division.
