Remains that were found south of Lawrence in January 2022 belonged to a man who went missing shortly after being released from jail in July 2021, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release Friday, the sheriff’s office said the remains belonged to 47-year old Guy Wayne Collins. The sheriff’s office said Collins was released from the Douglas County Jail on July 6, 2021, and was reported as a missing person two days later after his family members learned that he was out of jail but hadn’t heard from him. The sheriff’s office sought the public’s help in locating Collins.

The news release said that on Jan. 31, two people walking in the 1700 block of North 1250 Road noticed remains near a creek and alerted the sheriff’s office. The remains were identified as Collins’ after a DNA analysis by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation; the sheriff’s office said it received the KBI’s report on Friday.

No foul play was suspected in Collins’ death, according to the news release.
