A Lawrence toddler was killed in a shooting in eastern Lawrence on Friday.
Police responded to a reported shooting in the 1500 block of Wedgewood Drive around 10:45 a.m., Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department told the Journal-World. When officers arrived they found a 2-year-old was critically injured.
The child was taken to LMH Health, but was later pronounced dead, Ernst said. As of 2 p.m., Ernst said the incident was still under investigation, but it appeared to be an accident.
“Officers and detectives are currently speaking with the parties involved in the incident, and preliminary information suggests the shooting was accidental,” he said.
Multiple officers were seen gathered in the area of the residence shortly after the shooting was reported. Officers shut down a portion of East 15th Street in the area, and an ambulance with sirens was seen leaving the neighborhood.
Further information, including the child’s name, was not available Friday afternoon.
