Firefighters quickly extinguish early Sunday morning fire at 23rd Street auto shop

Lawrence firefighters made quick work of a fire at a 23rd Street business early Sunday morning.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Battalion Chief Brandon Holloman said firefighters from Station No. 2 were able to get water on a fire at Automotive Technology Specialist Inc., 1226 E. 23rd St., eight minutes after receiving a 12:17 a.m. dispatch of flames inside the business. Firefighters from the station at 2128 Harper St., a half mile from the fire, had it under control at 12:35 a.m., he said.

“It’s a nice thing to have a fire station so close,” Holloman said. “It illustrates the importance of having stations located strategically.”

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in structural damage and $15,000 in damage to the building’s contents, Holloman said. Its cause remains under investigation, he said.

Smoke appeared to set off a motion alarm, which alerted Douglas County dispatchers of the fire. A Lawrence police officer who was sent to investigate the scene reported flames within the building, Holloman said.

No one was injured in the incident, Holloman said.
