Police respond to a shooting near 15th and Kentucky streets on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021.

A person was fatally shot in the 1500 block of Kentucky Street on Wednesday evening, and emergency radio traffic indicated that police were seeking a suspect who had fled the scene.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, where they found a male victim who had been shot, police Lt. David Ernst told the Journal-World in an email. An air ambulance was called, but the victim had died before it arrived, according to scanner traffic. Neighbors near 15th and Vermont streets said they heard multiple gunshots.

Crime scene tape stretched from 1521 Kentucky St. across a parking lot of an apartment building to the south. An area between 1447 W. 15th St. and 118 W. 15th St. was also taped off.

Police were looking for a maroon Pontiac that left the scene after the incident, and scanner traffic indicated that someone in the vehicle tossed a handgun into a bush on West 15th Street.

Ernst said that the police department was “working to identify and locate who was involved in the incident.” He asked anyone with information to call the department’s investigations division at 785-830-7430 or Crime Stoppers at 785-843-8477.
