Woman from New York state killed in hit-and-run accident near Ottawa

A woman from New York state was killed in a hit-and-run accident Friday evening on Interstate 35 in Franklin County.

The accident occurred at 8:23 p.m. Friday about 3 miles east of Ottawa. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash logs, Lori Anne Maxwell, 54, of Gloversville, N.Y., and Adrion Micheal Self, 22, of Emporia, were both stopped in the right southbound lane. Maxwell got out of her vehicle, a Dodge Ram, and started walking toward Self’s Jeep Compass. A semitrailer then sideswiped the Jeep, struck Maxwell and drove away.

Maxwell was fatally injured. Self and his two passengers, 22-year-old Amanda Joan Soule and 5-month-old Miles Lee Self, were not injured.

The Highway Patrol log did not say why the two vehicles were stopped in the roadway or why Maxwell left her vehicle.

A Kansas Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Saturday morning that the driver of the semitrailer had not yet been identified.
