A Lawrence man scheduled to be sentenced for felony convictions next month has again been arrested for allegedly breaking into someone’s home to steal money.
Casey L. Williams Jr., 24, was formally charged in Douglas County District Court on Friday with aggravated robbery, a level-three felony, and aggravated burglary, a level-four felony.
Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 900 block of Arkansas Street around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. A resident told police three individuals approached the resident and struck the resident with a pistol, which caused a minor injury. The three individuals reportedly entered the resident’s home and stole money, then fled before police arrived.
The following morning, a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy found one of the suspects, Williams, outside an apartment in the same block and arrested him. Police are still searching for the two other individuals, Ernst said.
During the hearing Friday, Judge James T. George set a $100,000 cash or surety bond in the case and scheduled Williams’ next hearing for Tuesday. When asking for the bond, a prosecuting attorney said Williams was considered a “risk to the community.”
Williams has been arrested multiple times in recent years and has faced many criminal charges.
Earlier this year, Williams rejected a plea deal that would have resolved nearly 20 felony and misdemeanor charges in eight separate cases, the Journal-World reported. However, he later took a plea deal in September.
Jill Jess, a spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s Office, said Williams agreed to a deal that saw him convicted of one count of burglary of a dwelling and two counts of criminal threat, all of which are felonies.
Jess said the agreement recommends that Williams be sentenced to 31 months in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 1, according to court records.
The 19 charges were spread out over the eight cases that were filed between 2019 and 2021. According to charging documents provided to the Journal-World, some of the more serious charges included two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of burglary and one count of criminal possession of a firearm, which are all felonies. Williams is also facing several misdemeanor charges and felony drug charges.
Some of the charges stemmed from a reported shooting on Aug. 4, 2019, in an apartment complex near 24th Street and Ousdahl Road, the Journal-World previously reported. When police arrived, they found that a shooting likely did occur, but no one was injured as a result, Lawrence police spokesman Patrick Compton said at the time. However, Compton said one person was injured as a result of a physical altercation.
In another incident, Williams was accused of threatening someone with a gun in the 1900 block of East 19th Street on July 29, 2019, the Journal-World reported.
Additionally, Williams was previously convicted of aggravated robbery for a 2015 incident. He was sentenced to a little more than four years in prison in that case and was released in May 2019, according to state prison records.
