A Lawrence man is facing multiple felony sex charges for allegedly abusing two children several times between 2013 and 2018.
Zachary J. Lang, 37, on Tuesday was formally charged in Douglas County District Court with 10 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under the age of 14. The charges are all off-grid felonies, meaning they could all result in a life sentence in prison if Lang is convicted.
According to a charging document provided to the Journal World, Lang is accused of fondling both children several times. The children were born in 2009 and 2014, respectively. The documents show in each charge that the children were under the age of 5 when the alleged incidents occurred.
Lang was originally arrested around 4:30 a.m. Monday at the Lawrence Police Department headquarters, according to the booking log. Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department said police made the arrest after a report that officers received on Sunday. According to the LPD’s daily call log, police responded to a call for a reported sex crime shortly after 10 p.m. that day, but the address was redacted.
Noting the nature of the alleged crime, Ernst declined to provide any further information.
During the hearing, Judge James T. George set a $200,000 cash or surety bond for the case. Lang’s next court date is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office declined to release Lang’s booking photo to the Journal-World.
