Emergency crews responded to the scene of a fatal car accident Monday morning on Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence.

Emergency dispatch received the call shortly before 11 a.m. for a vehicle that was heading eastbound on the highway and ran off the road near the East 1900 Road exit ramp, which is between Lawrence and Eudora, said George Diepenbrock, a spokesman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

After preliminary investigation, deputies determined the vehicle veered off the south side of the highway and struck a bridge pillar under East 1900 Road, which passes over the highway. The crash killed the driver — Raymond Schell, 85, of Lawrence — who was the only occupant of the vehicle.

As of noon Monday, the right eastbound lane of K-10 was blocked in the area as first responders investigated. Deputies were also working to notify family members of the driver, Diepenbrock said.

The Kansas Highway Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Eudora Fire Department all responded to the accident.

The accident was the second fatality in or near Lawrence Monday morning. The first occurred around 3 a.m. on the 23rd Street exit ramp off westbound Kansas Highway 10 outside of Lawrence.
