Severe fire damage is seen in the garage and driveway of a duplex home at 1425 Maple Lane in eastern Lawrence on Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

An overnight fire left an eastern Lawrence home severely damaged on Wednesday.

Fire crews responded to a call for a house fire at 1425 Maple Lane around 12:45 a.m., Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said in a news release. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the single-story duplex home.

The fire crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and one side of the duplex building, the department said. Severe damage could be seen to one of the duplex’s garages, where a vehicle was parked and appeared to be destroyed by fire. Additionally, ash from the fire was piled in the driveway of the home.

The department said two individuals in the home were awakened by the smell of burning plastic and the sound of smoke alarms. They were treated by medical personnel at the scene. No firefighters were injured in the incident.

The department said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
