A Lawrence man is facing felony charges for allegedly molesting a 5-year-old.

Douglas County prosecutors filed charges against Christopher M. Smith, 38, last month on two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to a charging document provided to the Journal-World on Wednesday. The charges are both off-grid felonies, meaning they could result in a sentence of life imprisonment, according to Kansas sentencing guidelines.

On April 21, Smith allegedly engaged in lewd fondling or touching of a person under the age of 14 with the intent to arouse or satisfy sexual desires, the charging document says.

Details of what occurred were not immediately available. The Journal-World has filed a request for the affidavit supporting Smith’s arrest. A preliminary hearing, where evidence in the case will be heard, is scheduled for July 13.

Smith is currently in custody on a $75,000 cash or surety bond, according to jail records.

The Journal-World has requested Smith’s booking photo but has not yet received it from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The jail lists Smith as a white man with red hair and green eyes.
