Bomb squad investigates small amount of suspicious material, finds no risk to public safety

A Kansas City-area bomb squad was called out to Lawrence to investigate a small amount of suspicious material on Wednesday but determined that it was not a danger to the public, a law enforcement official said.

Around 5:15 p.m., the Lawrence Police Department responded to a call from a property owner in the 2300 block of Vermont Street who found the suspicious material, department spokesman Patrick Compton said. After examining the substance, the police called in the Olathe bomb squad, which determined that the substance appeared to be consistent with an explosive material used for breaking up limestone. The bomb squad also determined that there was not enough of the material for it to be a danger to the public.

Compton said the bomb squad took the substance and will destroy it at a later date.
