Firefighters contain early-morning fire to detached garage

Firefighters put out a fire early Monday at an eastern Lawrence home, containing the fire to the house’s detached garage

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said in a news release that it responded to a structure fire at 1301 New York St. around 2:45 a.m. After arriving minutes later, the firefighters could see flames coming from the detached garage, which is just west of the home. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control by 3:04 a.m.

Later on Monday, fire damage could be seen on the exterior of the garage. The department reported no injuries to the family or firefighters. Additionally, the family was not displaced from their home because of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the department said.
