Police are investigating a reported shooting that injured a man Thursday evening in south-central Lawrence.

Officers were called to the 1700 block of West 24th Street shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday and found a man with “an apparent gunshot wound,” Lawrence police spokesperson Patrick Compton said in an email. Emergency radio traffic monitored by the Journal-World’s reporting partner Operation 100 News indicated that a man in his early 20s had been shot in the head.

First responders called a medical helicopter, which flew the man to the University of Kansas hospital in Kansas City, Kan., according to radio traffic. He was in stable condition as of about midnight Friday, Compton said.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Lawrence man at the scene on suspicion of reckless aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and he was booked into Douglas County Jail, where he is awaiting charges, according to the jail’s online log.

No further details were available as of early Friday morning.
