Woman hit, killed by train overnight in Lawrence

A woman died overnight in Lawrence after she was hit and severely injured by a train.

Around 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report that a train had struck a person in the area of Second and Indiana streets, near Burcham Park, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jenn Hethcoat said. First responders, including Lawrence police and Lawrence-Douglas County fire and medical personnel, searched the area and found a female victim. The woman died on scene despite lifesaving measures by first responders, Hethcoat said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating, and further details were not available as of mid-morning Wednesday, Hethcoat said.
