Two injured in crash, roads closed near 9th and Alabama streets

Two people were injured in a single-vehicle crash at Ninth and Alabama streets in Lawrence on Thursday afternoon, according to police.

The vehicle struck a tree at the northeast corner of the intersection, said Patrick Compton, spokesperson for the Lawrence Police Department.

The driver was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, Compton said. He said the passenger in the vehicle was injured but was conscious after the crash, and that person was also taken to the hospital.

As of just before 5 p.m. Thursday, Lawrence police had closed Ninth Street in both directions from Illinois to Maine streets. Alabama Street was also closed in both directions from Eighth to 10th streets, Compton said. He estimated that the closure would last a couple more hours.
