Woman dies in 7-vehicle accident after pipes fall off truck on I-70

TOPEKA — A Manhattan woman was killed in a seven-vehicle crash that began when large metal pipes fell off a semitrailer on Interstate 70, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said pipes on a tractor-trailer driving east on the interstate in Topeka fell off and went over a barrier into westbound traffic Wednesday afternoon.

One pipe struck a westbound Ford SUV and landed on top of a Kia Forte driven by Brooke Rees, 29, of Manhattan. A Ford pickup was unable to stop and hit Rees’ car, the patrol said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other vehicles also hit the metal pipes. None of the other six drivers and eight passengers involved in the crash were injured.
