The Kansas Sampler was open and busy today after a Christmas Day burglary that left one of the window panes of the storefront at 921 Massachusetts St. broken and replaced with plywood.
At the front counter on a busy day for Christmas gift exchanges, assistant manager Darian Koenig said the store was closed Christmas Day, and she didn’t know if any store merchandise was missing from the burglary. She did confirm social media reports that a passersby reported the burglary Saturday evening when that person saw figures dressed in black entering the store through a broken window and taking merchandise.
Lawrence Police Department spokesman David Ernst wrote in an email that officers were dispatched about 9 p.m. to for a burglary in progress. He said passerby reported a window to the building was broken and a suspect was in the business. A police office already investigating a separate business alarm observed a suspect leaving the business on a bicycle. The officer gave chase on foot while other officers joined the pursuit.
The suspect was stopped and arrested near Eighth and Vermont streets, Ernst wrote. Police officers recovered suspected stolen merchandise along the route of the chase.
Douglas County Jail booking logs show Cullen Patrick McGraw, 30, of Lawrence, was arrested at 9:55 p.m. Saturday at 725 Vermont St. and charged with allegedly attempting to flee and elude after committing a felony, felony burglary of a non-dwelling and felony criminal damage to property.
