Firefighters were working to put out a house fire in northern Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crews were seen responding to a fire at 3425 Tillerman Drive around 4 p.m. Smoke could be seen coming from the roof of the home as firefighters worked near the front door and garage.

Johnny Mai, the owner of the home, told the Journal-World his family had evacuated from the home, but he wasn’t sure what caused the fire. He said he wasn’t home when it began but a neighbor told him they saw a trash can on fire.
