A man was taken by helicopter to the University of Kansas Hospital after a single-car accident early Sunday morning.

The Lawrence Police Department confirmed that a vehicle traveling northbound on Kasold Drive veered off the road and struck a light pole near Harvard Road at about 4:25 a.m. on Sunday morning. The driver of the vehicle had serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to a regional medical center, after having been extricated by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews, police department spokesman Patrick Compton said via e-mail.

Journal-World news partner Operation 100 News reported the driver was a male who was transported to KU medical center.

Nicole Riegle, of Lawrence, told the Journal-World she reported the accident to 911 after being awoken by a crash near the intersection of Kasold Drive and Harvard Road. Riegle said she went to to the accident scene and stayed with an injured adult male driver, the only person in the vehicle, until emergency vehicles arrived about 4:30 a.m.
