2 killed Friday in separate Leavenworth County accidents

Two motorists were killed in separate accidents Friday in Leavenworth County.

According to an online Kansas Highway Patrol accident report, Gary W. Story, 83, of Tonganoxie, was killed in a two-vehicle accident at 12:05 p.m. Friday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 24 and Stone Creek Drive in Tonganoxie. According to the report, Story was attempting to turn left from the westbound U.S. 24 lane against a red traffic arrow when his Dodge Caravan was struck by a GMC Sierra.

Story was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in his vehicle, Edris S. Welsh, 81, of Tonganoxie, was taken to the University of Kansas hospital with suspected serious injuries, according to the report. The driver of the Sierra suffered suspected minor injuries in the incident but was not transported for treatment, according to the report.

The Kansas Highway Patrol also reported that a motorist was killed early Friday morning in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 70 in western Leavenworth County.

According to the Highway Patrol crash logs, the accident occurred at 1:52 a.m. Friday at I-70 mile marker 209.2, which is about 5 miles east of the easternmost turnpike interchange in Lawrence. The report states that the westbound motorist swerved off the roadway to the left several times before the vehicle went airborne and rolled multiple times. The vehicle came to rest on top of the driver, who was ejected during the crash, the report states.

The driver in the I-70 crash was not identified in the Highway Patrol’s report.
