Lawrence woman, Topeka man injured in wreck east of Lawrence
A man and woman were taken to the hospital following a wreck early Saturday in rural Douglas County east of Lawrence, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit because of a suspected impaired driver around 5 a.m. Saturday, according to the report. The driver reportedly fled, and the deputy didn’t pursue the car after losing sight of the vehicle near the intersection of North 1500 Road and East 1750 Road.
The car was discovered about two hours later, just west of 1791 North 1500 Road. It had left the roadway for about 100 feet before it rolled an undetermined number of times, according to the report.
The reports states that the driver of the car, Matthew David Zaitz, 32, of Topeka, and passenger, Heather Marie Heideman, 35, of Lawrence, both suffered suspected serious injuries and were taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Zaitz was not wearing a seat belt but Heideman was, according to the report.
It was not clear from the report whether the occupants were still inside the car when it was found.
