Multiple fire crews responded to an early-morning fire at a bar in downtown Lawrence Saturday.

Firefighters were called to Harbour Lights, 1031 Massachusetts St., at 6:12 a.m. after a caller reported seeing black smoke coming from the alley behind the bar, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Division Chief Tom Fagan said in a press release.

Upon arrival, crews found fire on the exterior patio on the alley side of the business and were able to quickly contain and extinguish it, Fagan said. A business employee had sustained minor injuries trying to extinguish the fire before crews arrived on scene, according to the release.

Emergency responders temporarily shut down a block of Massachusetts Street between 10th and 11th streets as firefighters opened hydrants and checked the interior and roof of the building.

Noticeable renovation work has been underway for some time at the bar, which had already been closed before health orders related to the coronavirus pandemic took effect.

The fire department said it is investigating the fire. The damage is estimated at $50,000, Fagan said Saturday evening in an email to the Journal-World.
