A Lawrence man was charged in Douglas County District Court on Thursday after police alleged that he caused a three-car crash that injured a child while he was driving under the influence.
Emiliano Deaquino Salgado, 26, was formally charged at a Zoom videoconference hearing on Thursday with aggravated battery, aggravated endangering a child and driving under the influence of alcohol. The charges are two low-level felonies and a misdemeanor, respectively.
Deaquino Salgado was arrested Tuesday evening after police say he rear-ended a car, which in turn struck another vehicle that was stopped at a red light at Clinton Parkway and Wakarusa Drive.
Police said a juvenile passenger in Deaquino Salgado’s vehicle — a 7-year-old, according to the charging document in the court case — was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The judge set Deaquino Salgado’s bond at $10,000 own recognizance with pretrial monitoring and an order not to consume alcohol. However, he has a hold from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the jail’s booking log.
Deaquino Salgado’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3.
